St. Catherine of Siena Parish New Playground Is Now Open
The new playground at St. Catherine of Siena Parish and School in Metairie was built by skilled and unskilled construction volunteers and parish organizations Aug. 3-7, 2022, including our very own Daniel “Danny” Polson. Danny spent his birthday weekend working hard on the playground to finish it before the school year began on August 9, 2022. In fact, his late father helped build the playground 30 years ago, which has been enjoyed by Danny and his three sisters these past years. Today, he helps build this fantastic playground for his children, “Twinkies,” and future generations to come. With safety being a priority, the decision was made to build a new, expanded playground using modern technology that is weather-resistant and won’t rot, fade, or splinter. The new construction today replaces an old wooden playground that had fallen into disrepair due to the natural elements of sun and rain. The playground has artificial turf replacing the former tire mulch, a rubber running track, and is surrounded by an iron fence. The same company that created the playground 30 years ago – Playgrounds by Leathers – again designed this one. It was funded primarily by donations from the parish Men’s Club, Ladies Coop Club, a school-building fee as part of tuition, summer camp proceeds, and iGiveCatholic donations. Great work to all the volunteers and helpers who helped build a fantastic playground!
SLEEP OUT TO END YOUTH HOMELESSNESS
No person is an island, and we know that we couldn’t be where we are today without those in our community. This is why we do what we can to give back to our community and lift those around us. Here are a few ways we help our friends and neighbors. Danny and Jeanne participated in the Covenant House Sleep Out to support homeless youth on November 15th, 2018. They were amongst 200+ sleepers who slept on the streets of New Orleans in sub-40 degree temperatures for one night, in solidarity with 4.2 million kids nationwide who experience homelessness. Everyone who participated in this mission raised funds to help provide kids with safe shelter and opportunities. The Sleep Out has helped provide 4000 youth with stable housing, 1600 youth with employment, and 720,000 nights of shelter. We look forward to continuing to support Covenant House.
